It quickly became my favorite story - the book is well-worn and filled with notes on the margins. This story is originally an oral folk tale from Korea about an orphaned girl who is subjected to multiple layers of oppression and is asked to perform acts of devotion to the ideology of patriarchy. To this day, this folktale is required reading for many elementary school students in Korea, a practice which indoctrinates young girls in systemic oppression. The departure point for my project is the recreation of the Princess Bari story with the aim to re-contextualize historical women’s domestic exploitation in Korea, in the U.S., and around the world. Through changing the narrative of a Korean folk tale, a community of women can reflect on their own experiences, break down internalized patriarchy, and create a space to liberate themselves by their own hand. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Part I 08:41 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Part II 01:51 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Part III 00:46 South Korean women were able to reevaluate and rewrite the traditional folktale of ‘Princess Bari,’ which is being reproduced into different mediums and being read by young students as part of required reading lists to this day. Through a re-reading and re-contextualization of a book about oppression towards women, participants empathized with Bari in the story and in the real world, empowered one another, and enacted social change through their own agency. As I collected stories from participants, I continually thought about how to disseminate the profound learnings and moments of compassion witnessed during the two intimate conversations shown in the work. I challeged the audience to tolerate a level of discomfort, to take a risk, and even to make a small sacrifice in order to connect with the stories. Inside the aquarium and the wooden pool are pumps which circulate water between them. The installation creates multiple reflections through projections and ripple effects. My art practice uses grass-roots techniques like workshops and conversations to create my own space beyond a homogeneous society. During interviews, field research and group discussions, I found that marginalized people are often compelled to assimilate to white norms, to fit into white spaces, and to perform identity roles. To subvert these structures of power, I created Cascade Voices, which invites young diasporic individuals to share unspoken stories and to discover shared narratives or co-empowerment. A total of 18 people—Asian, LatinX and Middle Eastern—appear in Cascade Voices. Four or five people sit in a circle and have a conversation while I video-document their interactions. Very little instruction is given until the end of the discussion when each participant asks a question directly into the camera. The next group starts their conversation by responding to the questions posed by the previous group. For example, Group 1 discussed having two identities and feelings of “always not being enough”, and Group 3 talked about difficulties communicating with their first-generation parent, especially around the topic of race. I set up a workshop in which twenty participants watched one of YouTuber Maangchi’s videos to make kimchi. Maanchi, with 5 million subscribers, is famous for teaching Korean recipes. Having previously never made kimchi before, I was just another beginner at the workshop, reconnecting with my culture virtually. Through this video experiment, I captured the surreal moments we were experiencing, and revealed absurdities at the end of April. On the day of video shooting, I played BBC and CNN news about coronavirus and Kim Jong-un’s health issues while filming, and recorded it as a collage. The background news sound was getting louder and gradually eroding the entire scene. The letter in the video written by the female figure is in Korean, and the recipient is “Dear Mom and Dad.”&nbsp; This video and audio collage is archiving the odd time of the COVID-19. Also, this film is whispering secretly only to the Korean American community in the way of news in English but the letter in Korean. Mediums used in thi work include line tape drawings, window art using glow paint,and community communication-based performance art. Patrons were encouraged to share painful memories (their bad seed) by writing them down on a storefront window. The intention of this performance-based work was to create a common plot where bad seeds might flower beautifully with the attention of others. Bad Seed was inspired by an incident that happened to me one week before the YpsiGlow Art Festival. I discovered one morning a neighbor had graffitied hurtful words on my car windows: phrases like “Lazy,” “Rude,” and “Look at me – I can’t park” were written with neon pink glow marker on all four windows. Rather than suppress my embarrassment an anger I created the Bad Seed exhibition. The exhibition lasted 3 weeks at a local brewery. Each time I checked the storefront window more people had added their own experiences and sorrow. People began drawing flowers around the painful experiences of others. I lived for about 8 months to conduct an artist residency program. Gunsan was a prosperous fishing city until the late 1990’s when the world’s longest seawall was constructed off its coast. Surrounding mountains were carved up, immense mudflats were filled with sand, and concrete was poured to protect construction sites from the tides. New manufacturing jobs were promised but most residents did not have the engineering skills to fill those positions.Ideas were solicited from local residents as to how Gunsan might be reconfigured, and the city was rearranged accordingly. Three artists acted as butchers to carve Gunsan. Don’t Believe in it : The Manufactured Myth of the Deep Freezer. Deep freezers are designed for cold storage of meat, fish, vegetables and other food stuffs. A clean and sterile deep freezer is a source of pride, a mark of high standards for quality and food safety. On the other hand, a butcher’s freezer can also be a space to hide mistakes, weaknesses, and evidence of having cut corners. The Mythical Deep Freezer reflects Gunsan’s landscape which has been reshaped, as well as the livelihoods of Gunsan residents, which have been carved up. The myths that are fed to us become embedded in our consciousness and we believe in them, (un)knowingly. This work has evolved from recording the boundaries between lies and truth, as well as witnessing the tragic evidence of people believing in lies that they wish were true. Therefore, I aimed to create lies that one wished were true to revisit these marginalized areas. I found myself growing happier while developing and displaying these absurd lies.
